At Laundry, the latest endeavor from creative chef and entrepreneur Rex Brice, we pride ourselves on the time and research we put into stocking our menu with locally sourced products. There are incredible artisans producing amazing quality food items here in Routt County and the state of Colorado. When we began organizing what would become Laundry's unique menu, we made a conscious decision to buy local and look for all-natural products to serve. Here's an example of the great farms and regional purveyors we work with: * Tasty Tomato right here in Steamboat Springs hydroponically grown heirloom tomatoes and basil from the vine to the table. * Maneotis Ranch supplies our lamb from here in Steamboat they specialize in a happy grass fed lamb humanely raised and butchered. * Il Mondo Vecchio supplies us with some of our artisan charcuterie and cheeses from Denver. * Alamosa Fisheries is the supplier for the awesome striped bass. It is sustainably raised and responsibly handled from nearby Alamosa Colorado. * Haystack Creamery gives us some more of our great cheeses they come from happy goats in Longmont Colorado. * Avalanche is another artisan cheese company we use who hails from Basalt Colorado near Aspen. We make a large portion of our own charcuterie here at the restaurant from local and regionally farmed happy animals. We are always striving to find artisans in and around Colorado to support our local economy and make use of the great products that abound here.

And we embrace sites like Trip Advisor, Urban Spoon and Yelp as a mechanism for gauging our customer satisfaction levels. We appreciate the feedback we've gotten from these reviews and work to enhance our operations based on your input. We have been extremely fortunate to find out that our customers have been satisfied overall and thank each and every person who has taken the time to give us a report card through these channels. Just read what our patrons have to say...About Rex's: 'A locals favorite, interesting and award winning entrees, and great service. Kenny has worked there for over 4 years, takes good care of his customers and always ready with a recommendation."Praise for Mazzola's: 'My partner and I stopped in here on our recent weekend trip to Steamboat because we were craving pizza. We got so much more! First of all, the service was outstanding. The ambience was really nice and the prices were very reasonable, especially for a resort town. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer and they were perfect. The sauce was so good I wanted to drink it! The pizza was also incredible (we got the Mediterranean). I will most definitely come here again the next time I'm in Steamboat.'Praise for Lil' House: The "Lil House is a must do stop any time I am on the west side of town. I like to get the "Hombre Burrito" with choriza, eggs, potatos and beans to go. Coffee is excellent, service is friendly and prompt and the prices are right. This is the best fast breakfast anywhere! So as we move through another ski season and serve more and more visitors and locals, we'd like to cordially invite each and every one of you to consider posting a review for any of our dining establishments. We sincerely appreciate your feedback.LINKS:Rex's on Trip Advisor Mazzola's on Trip Advisor Big House Burgers on Trip AdvisorLil' House Biscuits & Coffee on Trip Advisor

Mornings at Lil' House are never boring. The collection of customers is quite eclectic; a group of friends watching TV and enjoying hot coffee and conversations, a cowboy ordering the Gravy Train biscuit to go, and a few skiers on their way to the mountain digging into the El Capitan burrito! Amongst the steady line of customers, we were able to squeeze in a quick chat with Tim, morning barista. This is what we found out: Hometown: MichiganSkier or Rider?: Neither right now, taking the season off. History of Tim: Tim learned the art of coffee in Fairbanks, Alaska and has only recently moved to Steamboat Springs. He makes a mean Latte, Hot Chocolate, or Americano – whatever you prefer! Tim is an artist at heart and has even dabbled in coffee art! Yes, coffee art. His debut was Valentine’s Day, when he surprised customers with a rose designed from coffee grinds. Tim loves the Steamboat Springs lifestyle and did we mention his impeccable service!Time worked at Lil' House: about 6 months, but has worked for the Rex’s Family of Restaurants for about 1 year.Favorite Lil' House Drink: Caramel Mocha Latte (yum!)Favorite Lil' House Biscuit: The “Chicken Lickin’ Biscuit” (Fried Chicken with house mayo and pickles on a fluffy biscuit) - A Little House Classic You can find Tim, a great smile, and always fresh and delicious food most mornings at Lil' House Country Biscuits & Coffee!
With the arrival of 2011 it's once again time to participate in the "Best of the Boat" voting for your favorite restaurants, shops & services in Steamboat. That's right, Explore Steamboat is giving you an opportunity to voice your opinion about your favorite places to eat, drink and shop in 2011.The Steamboat Restaurant Group has been honored with nominations in several categories this year. Rex's American Grill & Bar is up for Best Lunch, Best Steak and Best Happy Hour. I suppose offering half price apps, drinks and pizzas before 6pm doesn't hurt us in this category.Mazzola's Majestic Italian Diner, with a newly revised menu and tremendous weekly specialty dinners is up for both Best Family Restaurant and Best Italian food in Steamboat. We feel strongly that these nominations stem from the fact that anyone who loves Italian food knows Mazzola's for offering only the freshest selections year-round. Our chefs at Mazzola's work tirelessly to design creative and tasty dishes and winning these categories would be a great honor to them.Big House Burgers and Bottlecap Bar has taken Steamboat by storm over the last year. Chef McKenzie has put in countless hours to perfect the dishes we serve at Big House in both taste, value and presentation. We're confident you won't find a better burger for the price anywhere else in town which is why we are honored to be nominated for Best French Fries, Best Beer Selection and, of course, Best Hamburger. You may know 'Lil House Country Biscuits and Coffee Shop as a convenient "morning joint" west of town but we've taken it well beyond just that. With fresh homemade biscuits, Sweetwood Cattle Company meats, delicious coffee and outstanding breakfast burritos, 'Lil House is pleased to be in the running for Best Breakfast Spot and Best Coffee Shop.So if you've experienced one or more of our restaurants this year and would like to voice your opinion, we encourage you to do so. The voting is happening now and ends January 15th. You can quickly and easily place your vote at ExploreSteamboat.com and we encourage you to check out our Facebook page to claim your reward for voting. That's right, we are rewarding people just for taking the time to place their vote so head over to Facebook.com/SteamboatDining for an instant $5 gift card.Thank you very much for your support and patronage over the years. We truly appreciate it!
Sometimes the hardest part about going out for breakfast is deciding if you want something sweet or something spicy. For example, at Lil' House you could order a house made NOT SO LIL' pastry of the day and a cup of fresh fruit or you could order the fiery “Hombre Burrito” (scrambled eggs, Sweetwood Cattle chorizo, hash browns, black beans and pepper jack cheese)! No matter how you slice it, it’s always a tough choice. So, our advice, when faced with the ever-challenging question of what to order for breakfast is to go with the BISCUIT! Ah, the biscuit – buttery and ever-so-fluffy with a hint of sweetness. Add Sweetwood Cattle sausage, egg, and cheddar cheese and you’ve just made the best breakfast decision of the week! You can thank us later... Happy eating!
There's just something about a dinner that includes Hot Nutz, a Froot Loop, a Korean Kick and Hooch Baby that grabs a person's attention. So when Rex's American Grill teamed up with the Samuel Smith brewery to concoct a 5 course dinner with a highly specialized menu we decided to go all out.Samuel Smith, the ‘Old Brewery at Tadcaster,’ is located in Yorkshire England and is the oldest brewery in the area. Founded in 1758, Samuel Smith stays true to its roots and is one of the few remaining independent breweries in England. To this day they are the last to utilize the classic Yorkshire Square system of fermentation. This is the process of fermenting the beer solely in stone squares which gives their varietals a pure body and taste. The Samuel Smith strain of yeast dates to the early 1900’s and brew water is drawn from a well sunk over 200 years ago. All of their beers are 100% vegan and remain amongst the most awarded in history. The dinner we’ve designed to compliment these barley beverages is one of kind and we’re thrilled to host this event.Start your evening with an organic lager and be prepared for a real “wow factor.” Chef Vicki’s menu includes laughing bird shrimp spring rolls, mulligatawny tortelloni, soft-boiled hen eggs and szechwan bbq short ribs. Each of these courses has been paired with ciders, ales, stouts and ales for a truly unforgettable meal. For dessert, take delight in a passion fruit panna cotta paired with a Lindeman’s Peche Lambic. When its all said and done, our guests will walk away with full tummies and smiles all around. Leave it to our hard-working staff at Rex’s to come up with a dinner this well planned and an another event Steamboat can look forward to. Click here to post and view comments.
Hold on to your boot straps, this week in Steamboat Springs brings with it one of the coolest and most unique skiing events on the planet! That's right, it's "Cowboy Downhill" time which means lots of crazy men in chaps taking over the slopes. Can you believe it has been 37 years since Billy Kidd, Director of Skiing for the Steamboat Ski Resort, approached a group of bull riders and convinced them to strap on some skis? Cowboys by nature have always been a tough breed but brave were the few that took Billy up on his challenge. This Tuesday, January 18th at “high noon” you will bear witness to over 50 cowboys dual it out on the Headwall face for respect and bragging rights on their way to being crowned “Fastest Tough Buster on the Mountain!”The afternoon events include festivities in the Bud Light Tents and around the base area with a free concert from Sun Dog, a slalom event at 4pm and the “Stampede” to follow. Winners will be awarded on a number of categories at 5:30pm and we hope to see the crowd at Rex’s after that. We’ll order an extra barrel of whiskey that day and the beers will be cold. We sincerely hope you enjoy everything good about this famous event and make a spectacular day of it. After all, if it were not for these unique happenings going on around our backyard, we might as well move to Des Moines.Click here to post and view comments.

If you didn't already know, our very own Chef Vicki Connacher is a native of South Africa and lived there for the first 22 years of her life. How she made her way to 'Ski Town U.S.A.’ to set roots in Steamboat is a story you’ll have to ask her yourself. But here she is as our head chef at Rex’s and takes pride in preparing some of the most delicious food in the valley. On Saturday, November 20th Chef Vicki is preparing an edible tribute to the country and food she grew up enjoying. Introducing the “Rainbow Nation – Taste of South Africa” dinner event at Rex’s. South African food is multicultural. It combines traditional European (specifically British, Dutch and Portuguese) influences with spiced curry flavors typically found in Indian and Malaysian cuisine. Traveling in and out of the Yampa Valley Regional Airport (YVRA) will look and feel a lot different a year from now. That’s because of a $6.8 million project currently under way that will include a new restaurant guided by our very own Rex Brice. For those that know Rex, it’s probably not a surprise to hear that he’s the Operations Consultant for such a major revitalization project at the airport. Rex has successfully managed to bring the Yampa Valley four outstanding eateries already and has made his name in town as the leading Steamboat restaurant mogul. The Steamboat Restaurant Group that Rex owns is often sought for advice when a dining establishment needs help blooming into a profitable business.Rex has described the plans for the new airport restaurant to serve “whimsical American fare” with both sit down, full-service and grab-and-go options. The new restaurant will be located on the main level of the airport in the heart of the airport’s terminal. Mr. Brice is steadfast in his ambition to have the interior of the restaurant reflect the area’s mining and agricultural heritage. In addition to that, Rex advocates the use of locally grown foods in the menu which is something he’s passionate about at all of his current restaurants.Plans for the operation of the new location will be up for proposal sometime next year. In addition, Rex has hinted that the name of the new restaurant will be open to the public to make suggestions. So get your taste buds ready and your creative juices flowing. Perhaps you’ve got the perfect name for this new airport locale and this could be your legacy to the Yampa Valley!
One of the nicest things about managing more than one restaurant in town is the flexibility to offer unique food and specials just about every day of the week. For one thing, the variety of dining we bring to hungry ‘Steamboaters’ is unparalleled when you consider we have an Italian restaurant, New American food establishment, coffee shop and burger joint all under the Steamboat Restaurant Group umbrella. When you’ve got an empty stomach we can fill it any number of ways. But now let’s consider what happens when our chefs and managers get creative with nightly deals and promotions to entice you with quality food and drinks at discounted prices. This is where our group of restaurants begins to shine.Let’s start by talking about Big House Burgers. Chef McKenzie has designed a reason for you to stop in just about every day of the week. Starting with “Margarita Mondays” you can get $5 margs and $15 pitchers with 2-for-1 apps all night long. In addition to the margaritas, Big House Burgers is THE place to catch Monday Night Football with KFMU radio and loads of giveaways. “Tin Can Tuesdays” have been a huge hit as well. Take advantage of $1 off all can beers all night. Get over the hump with “Hump Day Shots” including $3 shots of Jager, Rumple and Stoli O each and every Wednesday. Sunday at Big House is a huge day for watching football. We’ve got 10 HD flat screens with the NFL Sunday Ticket. That’s every game, every week! Not to mention that all of the specials from throughout the week are offered all day on Sunday so take your pick! Now Mazzola’s has gotten very into wine these days. For the coming months, you can look forward to “Wine Flight Fridays” offered exclusively at Mazzola’s. Every week our chef works with wine gurus to pair delicious foods with an accompanying wine selection. Enjoy a 3-course meal and 3 different wines for the low price of $25. And let’s not overlook the hugely popular “Ravioli Night” on Mondays and “Fish Night” on Tuesdays. These are some of the tastiest pasta and fish dishes you’ll see anywhere in town.Rex’s American Grill & Bar gets into the mix with a “Seafood Night” to die for! Every week, Chef Vicki has the freshest seafood you can get flown in directly to Rex’s for a savory meal you’ll look forward to all week. We’re not kidding when we promise you the best seafood choices you can get anywhere in the Rocky Mountains. And lately we think Rex may have lost his mind a little. We’ve recently rolled out a “50% off your entire bill” breakfast special from now through November 15th. That’s right, when you mention the special to your server between now and mid-November, you’ll receive half off everything you order for breakfast. Crazy, we know. And let’s not forget to mention our ‘lil friends at ‘Lil House Coffee & Biscuits. This place is superb for grabbing a made-to-order biscuit sandwich, breakfast burrito or fresh pastry to nibble while sipping the area’s most delicious coffee. ‘Lil House has quickly become the go-to spot for a morning meeting or catching up with old friends before starting out your day. So no matter how you slice it, when it comes to the best quality food for the price you can find in Steamboat, we’ve got you covered. Stop in and see us some time. We would love to see you and catch up on what’s been happening with you lately. We promise the food you order will be good to the last bite!
Looking over the calendar today reminds us that there are less than 50 days left until the 2010/11 ski season begins. A lot is going to happen between now and November 24th. The air will begin to hold a crisp, nippy feeling in the mornings and the sun will hide behind the western mountains much earlier in the evening. Dark clouds on the horizon will mean the onset of a snowfall instead of rain and as Steamboat locals we start to swap our lawn mowers for snow blowers.Yes, the shoulder season months of October and November are a great time to prepare for the winter months that bring us Champagne Powder® and fantastic skiing. One of the most exciting pieces of news to report is the announcement of some major resort improvements at the ski area. These include such things as:Increased Snowmaking Capacity – The pipes that pull water and feed the early season snowmaking guns have been replaced. A new 14-inch diameter pipe has taken the place of the old 12-inch pipe. This may not sound like a lot until you understand it amounts to a 27% increase in overall water flow. More water flow = More snowmaking!New Terrain Park Features – The resort will once again invest in the improvement of the terrain park by adding 30 new and refurbished rails & features this season. These range from low-to-the-ground “boxes” that help beginners learn the art of rail sliding to an advanced “Wall Ride” for experts.Kids Vacation Center Magic Carpet Relocation – The relocation of the Buckaroo magic carpet lift to the One Steamboat Place snow area will quadruple the amount of runs our kids can take per hour. Once again Steamboat is in position for the #1 ranking amongst Family Resorts in North America! So as you’re gearing up in anticipation of another great season on the slopes, remember the positive changes you can expect to experience in Steamboat Springs this year (not like you need any more reasons to get excited for winter!)
Operating with a mission to bring high-quality, great tasting fresh food to Steamboat Springs, the Steamboat Restaurant Group is proud to serve Sweetwood Cattle Company beef. Sweetwood artisan beef is farm raised right here on one of our locally owned and operated ranches. The sweet taste of this beef is a result of dedicated, hands-on ranchers and a balanced, natural diet. There must be something about the fresh air and pure Rocky Mountain water these cows enjoy that keeps them very happy. The cows lucky enough to call the Sweetwood Ranch their home are raised on wild grass and an assortment of herbs like peppermint, rosemary, parsley and ginger root. But the “sweet secret” that makes this beef so tasty is the sugar they get from beets they are fed which are also grown right here in Colorado. The Sweetwood Ranch operates very much on the same principles that our restaurants do. Their mission is simple: No more chemicals, antibiotics and animal bi-products in our food supply. In addition to a very holistic approach to ranching, the Sweetwood Ranch is entirely conserved by the Colorado Cattleman’s and Agricultural Land Trust for the benefit of future generations. So the next time you order from one of our restaurants you can rest assured you are getting the very best. This beef has been raised and processed one steer at a time to our chefs’ exact specifications. We pride ourselves on serving nothing less than perfection!
